Deck Construction in Deptford, NJ

Picture a summer evening where dinner moves outside without anyone carrying chairs across the lawn. A well-built deck makes that the normal routine instead of a special occasion. Bulls Eye Building & Remodeling builds decks for homes in Deptford and the surrounding towns, sized to the yard and attached to the house in a way that will still be solid twenty summers from now.

Start With How You Will Use It

The right deck depends far more on the household than on the house. A family that grills every weekend needs room for the grill, a clear path to the kitchen door, and space for a table that seats everyone. A couple who wants a quiet place for morning coffee might be happier with a smaller platform tucked into a corner of the yard where the sun lands early.

Questions worth answering before anything gets drawn:

  • How many people will typically be out there at once?
  • Will there be a grill, a hot tub, or heavy planters?
  • Which part of the yard gets shade in the afternoon?
  • Should the deck connect to the kitchen, the family room, or both?

A hot tub in particular changes the structure underneath, since a filled tub puts a concentrated load on one area of the framing.

Deck Layouts

Check

Ground-Level Decks

These sit low, often less than a step or two above the yard. They work well on flat lots and for homes with a slab foundation where the back door is close to grade.

Check

Raised Decks

When the main floor sits well above the yard, the deck rises to meet it. Raised decks need more attention to posts, bracing, railings, and stairs, and the space underneath can be screened in or left open for storage.

Check

Multi-Level Decks

On a sloped lot, or where one big platform would feel like a parking lot, two or three connected levels separate the cooking area from the seating area and follow the ground more naturally.

Materials and Upkeep

Most decks in this area are built from one of three materials. Pressure-treated lumber costs the least up front but needs cleaning and sealing on a regular schedule. Composite boards cost more and don't need staining, though they still need washing. PVC decking is fully synthetic and stands up well to moisture. Whatever goes on top, the framing underneath is typically pressure-treated lumber, so the hidden structure matters just as much as the boards you walk on.

Connecting the Deck to the House

The best decks feel like an extension of the room behind them. That often means rethinking the door. A narrow single door makes a deck feel like an afterthought, while a wider sliding or hinged patio door makes it part of the living space. We install windows and doors too, so a new patio door can go in as part of the same project. If the plan grows into a covered or enclosed space, our work on home additions covers the step beyond an open deck. The Bulls Eye Building & Remodeling home page lists everything else we build.

The clearest way to judge a contractor is to look at finished work. Our project portfolio shows kitchens, bathrooms, additions, decks, and exterior jobs from around the area, including before and after photos where we have them. If you want to understand what happens between the first phone call and the final walkthrough, our page on how we run a project lays out each stage.

Deck Construction FAQ

  • When does a deck need a railing?

Under the residential building code New Jersey follows, a guard is required on any open side where the deck surface is more than 30 inches above the ground below. Residential guards must be at least 36 inches high.

  • What are the rules for deck stairs?

The code limits each step to a riser height of no more than 7¾ inches. Each tread must be at least 10 inches deep. Keeping every step in a run the same height matters just as much, because uneven steps are a common cause of falls.

  • How is a deck attached to the house safely?

The ledger board, which carries one side of the deck, is fastened to the house framing with through-bolts or structural lag screws, never nails. Flashing goes over the ledger to keep water from getting behind it and rotting the house rim joist.

  • How deep do deck footings go?

Footings have to sit below the frost line set by the local code, so the ground freezing and thawing in winter doesn't lift and drop the posts. Footings that are too shallow are a frequent reason older decks go out of level.

  • How often does a wood deck need sealing?

Pressure-treated decks generally need cleaning and a fresh coat of sealer or stain every one to three years. How often depends on sun exposure and traffic. Composite and PVC decking skip that step and need only periodic washing.
